Report on Kluang Trip
Posted by Kai on April 6, 2008
Thomas Veterans: 2
Redbacks: 3
Venue: Kluang Stadium, Johore, Malaysia
Scorers: Ayyub (2), Ming
We gathered at Woodlands MRT station to set off on our journey. A blow was dealt when our goalkeeper, Sharizan was unable to make the trip due to an administrative error that is becoming customary for the odd Redback. Thanks to Mas Selamat, travelling via Woodlands Checkpoint was out of the question. We set off to Tuas instead and within an hour, we were in Malaysia. Torrential downpours greeted us along the way as we drove on the expressway.
Had lunch at Machap where everyone had a chance to sit back, relax and have a great chat with one another. This is another reason why we make it a point to have such overseas trips. It helps to build team cohesion and promote camaraderie. At about 5pm, we made our way to Kluang town. At town, we made a stop at a local sporting goods store to purchase a souvenir for our hosts. The players showed great enthusiasm in signing the ball, pretending that we were famous footballers going on a tour. Anyone ever thought that our names would be kicked about?
There was one last stop before we went to the stadium, a local chendol store which served EXCELLENT chendol. One of the best I have ever had in my opinion. A secret recipe passed down from generation to generation according to Bai, our tour guide for the day. It was truly refreshing and despite worrying that it might affect our play, we were in high spirits.
Every player was looking forward to the prospect of playing our very first night game in our short but illustrious history. The last time we were at the stadium, we were blitzed by our opponents. We were eager to make amends for the loss, even though we were up against different opponents.
Game Report
The first half was a cagey affair. Our hosts got into the rhythm first, stringing passes around with ease and confidence. Once our midfield got settled, we began winning more balls and launching attacks. Our opponents may be a little older than most of our players, but they certainly showed that they were up for it. Thomas Veterans’ attacks were more dangerous. However, poor finishing prevented them from taking a lead.
The Spiders scored against the run of play. Ming hit a cross into the box, a defender half-cleared it and the ball fell to Ayyub. With no other option, he hit a shot that found the corner of the net. It came from a fortunate deflection, but the Redbacks were not complaining. It helped settle some nerves. Our hosts were not going to take it lying down. They kept up the pressure and were soon rewarded. A swift counter attack resulted in their striker having all the time in the world to bring a cross under control and smashed it into the net. No chance Fauzi.
The game sparked into life in the second half. With the injection of more attacking-minded players, our attacks became more threatening. We reclaimed the lead through Ayyub once again. Having endlessly tried his luck in free kicks in previous games, he finally hit the jackpot, hitting a near-perfect free kick that left the goalkeeper rooted to the spot. We doubled our advantage not too long afterwards. Nordin released Ming on the left wing and the diminutive winger scored to give the Spiders some breathing space. That goal would prove to be the winner.
We were unlucky not to add to the score. Wan had the ball in the net twice but was adjudged to have been in an offside position on both occasions. Fauzi kept our lead safe too as he claimed every cross and parried shot after shot. His best save had to be one off a corner. The header had “GOAL” screaming all over it before Fauzi flung himself and palmed it away. However, there is no way to explain how he allowed a shot to squirm under his body, giving Thomas Veterans a lifeline. After the second goal, our team tightened teams out and were happy to push the ball around and let time run out. That was how things ended.
To celebrate the victory, we indulged ourselves with dinner and more merry-making. Accompanied by the Man City-Chelsea game in the background, laughter and happiness were in abundance. Another memorable trip as always. Next up, another K.L. trip in June during the Euro 2008 period? Keep the month free as this will be another event not to be missed.

We’re getting there. The main purpose of the game was to bond as a team. Seeing everyone laughing, smiling and joking is more important than the result. I think we saw an immediate effect in th game. Seems to be better understanding between one another.

Kudos Redbacks! Another wonderful trip up north. Enjoyed the game so much coz its the first time we played under the floodlight. Congrats to all, especially Fauzi, Ayub, Ming and all the good redbacks for the win. You all gerek punya brother.
But to me the most important thing is the quality time we spent together melepak and berdiskusi. That was fun coz we got to discuss some serious matters and laughed at the good old jokes. Redbacks must remain like this, we take our soccer seriously but at the same time always treasure our beautiful redbacks brothers. Take care of one another. Shout out and guide one another, and at the end of the day, forget and forgive.
That’s what I’ve learnt during the trip to Kluang. And to Redbacks FC…I luv you.
Note: Khai, beautiful write up. Power and well done bro.

I didn’t take any photos this time coz Ayyub was taking with his. Am in the process of replacing my camera if I have the budget insyaAllah. So I’m waiting on Ayyub to pass me photos. Ayyub, if you’re reading this, which would you prefer? Email me or burn into a CD? I’m fine with anything.

“Enjoy nampak!”
Yet another M.K.P.L performance!(Menang,Kalah,Pemain Lepak!) Typical Redbacks. We came,we enjoyed,we ate and ate.The Veterans were indeed overwhelmed by the marauding Redbacks, who had their fair share of Veterans too,ie;Abg “Rilek” Sani and Wan “Cannot Score One”.
I truly enjoyed the glowing performances of Oggy Ahmad Daud, who never seemed daunted by whatever position he plays in,especially as a keeper. At least the mystery of your slippery fingers at times is finally solved.(Cut the porn)
Wan Kecik was a Malek Awab in the making. He can run all night like an Energiser bunny, but if Wan “Cannot Score One” does not support him, poor Wan Kecik.Good job Wan Kecik!
Ming was a bundle of positive energy, coming in and out and in again and then finally scoring.Keep the enthusiasm. The learning curve was there for you to experience.
The bulk of the team was commendable as usual, performing as expected.Ajis missing a clearance as expected,Aki diving for a foul as usual,Sharm Bai running everywhere as usual,Azam needing a break as usual,Raizal flicking balls up in the air as usual,Wan not scoring as usual,Abg Sani playing like an S League veteran as usual,Captain screaming at Ajis at usual,Bob and Hisham barging into strikers as usual,Nordin screaming for the balls as usual,Kai passing the ball to everyone except Aki as usual,Ayyub scoring as usual and myself twisting my knee again,as usual.
The trip once again bonded the players as we had wanted. That was the crucial element in such trips. The Thomas Veterans are in their 24th year.Hope we can emulate those history some time.
Pergi ke pekan membeli gula
Untuk disuap kambing mengembek
Pemain baik,pemain giler
Itulah dia,pemain Redback
Aki mencarut,Kai pun sepak
Wan(B) ketawa,menepuk dada
Tradisi lapuk,budaya lepak
Kalah menang,enjoy mau ada
Pergi mendaki si Gunung Daik
Nampak Aki masih mencarut
Keeper baik,defence pun baik
Midfield baik,striker mengarut
Main bagus,opponent merah mata
Ingat kita pemain EPL
Biar apa orang nak kata
Redbacks baik,MKPL
Hidup Belakang dan Bontot Merah.

Hi bro redbacks…
I truly enjoy the trip and it was an experience that would be stored in my data bank to be shared with my grandchildren later in life…
We played well in patches but the support of all players was truly commendable.I could hear voices everywhere…in the pitch and from the sidelines…it was like a choir in motion…perhaps if we could just have a conductor and it would be poetry in motion…It was a memorable trip and we had fun.
Redbacks Boleh…

1st of all, it was truly a great experience … too short though but really worth the trip with you guys…
i must say that the people who organised the trip plus the drivers have done a brillant job! Both me and my girlfriend, Nureen had a great time! Everyone was very accomodating and full of fun! Looking forward to our next trip!!
Though we were up against a veterans’ team, they are no push-overs! They hit long balls harder than any young player! 1st half was pretty shaky as some of us still has butterflies in our stomaches! But kudos to our anchormen and backline, we managed to keep the score level at the break…
2nd half started off with a bang for us! Nordin’s presence was instantly felt as he too provided many attempted through balls, one that led Ming to score his goal! Ming i must say, you are re-discovering your scoring touch! But dun get carried away, there’s loads of room for improvement BRO!! Fauzi, i have to admit that it was hell of a save you made! You can be a very good keeper so continue to improve bro! The BIG brothers of the team: Azhar, Bob, Ajiz, Abang Sani plus the rest, really admire all your passion on and off the pitch man!! Jaz, really sorry to see you injured! Pls heal fast and come back soon man.. Kai, raizal and Sham(s) … you all really played with heart!
No doubt, we can be a force to be reckon with, especially on that night without Sharizan,Faiz, Mok… Redbacks managed a priceless away win that will be remembered deeply in my memory, not because of my goals… but because of the TEAMWORK we displayed that night!
(Kai… i am still in-camp… i’ll get Ming to burn the pics into a disc and possibly pass it to you this sunday okie??)
